Response to the English girl who said that about public transport: I’ve found from living in different places that talking to people on buses or the metro is VERY region-specific. I only really know about the East Coast of North America, but it seems to follow the Mason-Dixon line; people in the Northern US and Canada think it’s super weird when you talk on public transport, but it’s normal in the South. There’s a case to be made for not approaching strangers in closed spaces at all, of course.
