European Pelican: Autonomy includes the right to be wrong


Irrational people have the right to make choices.

Personal autonomy is not conditional on other people thinking that you are using it correctly.
That’s pretty much what makes it personal autonomy.
For instance, people have the right not to interact with dogs
  • Even if the only reason they don’t want to is that they have a phobia

Am I the only one who looks at this and almost cries in frustration? The right to choice does not mean we should all be selfish, ignorant fools!

Of course it doesn’t.

I’m not endorsing bad choices. Some choices really are bad, and people shouldn’t make them.

But when someone makes a bad choice, it doesn’t mean that others get to take over and make them do something better.
