Sometimes when someone’s saying something incomprehensible, it can help to be specific about what would help.
Eg:
“Can you repeat that?”
and
“Can you say that in different words?”
and
“Could you write that down?”
can sometimes get a comprehensible result when “What did you say?” doesn’t.
